MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Winona State soccer team battled MSU Moorhead on Friday afternoon, coming up with a 1-0 win in thrilling fashion.
The Warriors improved to 1-8 (1-6 NSIC) with the win, while the Dragons fell to 2-6-2 (1-5-1 NSIC).
Winona State held a 13-6 advantage in shots and recorded two corner kicks compared to MSU Moorhead's zero.
The Dragons offense looked to find the back of the net early when Alivia Thompson took a shot at the 4:26 mark, but it was saved by WSU goalkeeper Abigail Rounds. The Warriors offense got off to a slow start in the first half with Sam Perez taking their first shot at the 20:34 mark but missing just to the outside.

The Warriors and Dragons continued to battle back and forth for most of the first half. MSU Moorhead's Lilly Allen took a shot at the 34:34 mark, missing right, and shortly after, Maggie Jenks got off a shot that missed just high of the net. The Warriors looked to capitalize at the end of the first half with a shot by Romy Olson at the 43:11 mark and a shot by Kyleigh Jannisch at the 43:37 mark, but both were saved by MSUM goalkeeper Emilia Kristensen.
Jannisch looked to score early for WSU with a shot at the 45:51 mark that was saved by Kristensen. The Dragons responded with several shot attempts of their own, including a shot by Kaci Malo at the 56:06 mark, but Rounds was there to make the save for the Warriors.
Winona State kept giving itself chances throughout the second half. Faith Quinn took a shot at the 64:04 mark that was saved by Kristensen and Jannisch followed with a shot at the 73:23 mark, missing right. WSU kept trying to find the back of the net with shots from Romy Olson, Chloe Turner, McKayla Paukner and Madison Barnick late in the half.
The pressure from the Warriors finally paid off in the closing seconds. Following a shot from Barnick at the 89:27 mark that was saved by Kristensen and a corner kick, Paukner scored a goal as time expired that was assisted by Oliva Schneider and Jannisch, giving the Warriors their first win of the season in thrilling fashion.
