As a future third-grade teacher, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Pike B’26 knows that building leadership skills in college is important.
That is why the elementary education major from Rochester, Minn., is glad she attended a smaller school like Saint Mary’s, where opportunities to get involved and lead are abundant.
"It is so easy to get involved, and you have the ability to gain several leadership skills and roles when involving yourself around campus," she said, adding, "I have had so many great memories with my teammates, classmates, and professors, which has made this campus feel like home the last four years!"
Pike was on the softball team for most of her college career, took on the role of resident assistant, and served as an at-large representative and vice president of administrative affairs on Student Senate. She also worked in both the Admissions and Student Success offices.
"It has been nothing short of amazing, because of the experiences, opportunities, friendships, and networking," she said.
Pike said what makes Saint Mary’s special is the fact that everyone is kind and makes each individual feel special: "The people are truly what makes this campus enjoyable. Everyone is smiling, saying hello, or holding the door for you multiple times a day."
And, she said, that sense of community definitely extended to the Education Department. "The professors and staff were always available and willing to help with anything," she said. "I learned so much through my classes, field experiences, and the variety of courses that were offered at Saint Mary’s."
She feels confident in transitioning from learning to teaching next fall at Sacred Heart Elementary School in Adams, Minn.
"The ability to be involved at this campus has helped me grow in leadership skills that have helped shape me into the person I am today," she said. "Additionally, being a part of the softball team has helped me grow tremendously. Coach Tschida’s philosophy of hard work, grit, and efficiency has helped me within my academics and outside of school. They also will be strong attributes in my career. I want to thank my parents, the softball coaches, and my professors for being in the place I am today!"
