Absentee ballots by mail
The deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail is 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2026. Requests must be received by the Election Office by the deadline; postmarks do not count.
Official absentee ballot request forms are available on the Black Hawk County Elections website. Completed forms may be mailed or delivered to:
Black Hawk County Election Office
316 E. 5th Street
Waterloo, IA 50703
Prepaid return postage is included for absentee ballots returned by mail. Voted absentee ballots must be received by the Election Office no later than 8:00 p.m. on Election Day to be counted.
Voter registration deadline
The deadline to pre-register to vote is 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2026.
Eligible voters may still register after the preregistration deadline, subject to Iowa's election-day registration requirements. Voters registering after the deadline must provide proof of identity and residence. A valid Iowa driver's license with the voter's current address is the most common form of identification used for this purpose.
Voters who have requested a mailed absentee ballot should follow the ballot instructions carefully. Absentee ballots cannot be returned at polling places unless the voter surrenders and voids the absentee ballot and votes in person instead.
