SELBY: Garden Road: A Rorschach test for the uninitiated

In a hayfield, on the south edge of my father’s farm, a vine hangs in loose tangles from an oak. It’s been there long enough I cannot remember what is tree and what is parasite. They have always been joined together. Something would seem wrong if I walked out there one day to see the vine mi…

After India and the Navy, Souder returns home

Chuck Souder, throughout his time in the Peace Corps and the U.S. Navy, has visited nearly 40 nations. Even so, Souder has not gone too far, as he now lives on the farm where he grew up. It is a long way from India to rural Rudd.

SELBY: Garden Road: Indefensible weapons and pretending not to know of their existence

Within three generations, my male ancestors and a sibling experienced three of the most pivotal events of the 20th century in utero. My grandfather was gestating in his mother’s womb during the Great Flu, and he was born in December 1918. My father was in utero when they dropped the atomic b…

SELBY: Garden Road: Ragnarök of the green ash

          • Jason Selby

Across America, green ash trees are dying. It begins from the top down, seemingly, as leaves fall or simply never grow from the highest branches, leaving a ring of foliage around the bottom of the tree, which will soon enough fall away, also. They look stripped. The infection is evident in t…

SELBY: Garden Road: The difference between a cat and a rat

            • Jason Selby

No one likes a rat. So said Ron Sandvik, one of my mentors at the University of Northern Iowa. And he did not like cats, he added, which is important to my “Garden Road” column this week. Woe unto the lawyers, Christ declared long before Sandvik. Regulation can grow to an extremism that woul…

SELBY: Garden Road: A birthday and a death

              • Jason Selby

I did not feel I had too much to talk about this week, so I’ll talk about myself, which is easy to do, considering I’ve lived with myself since I was born. My birthday has passed, but I remember more birthdays than just this year’s. My children of advancing ages have always helped me celebrate.

Our farm six miles south of Corydon is where promenade began for my family. The pines and red maple that wrapped around the northeast side of the windbreak served as a dark green backdrop for formal pictures. We couldn’t afford anything fancy. My mother was the photographer.
