State Finals 8

Mason City’s Cullan Schriever warms up prior to his title bout against Fort Dodge’s Drake Ayala Saturday during the final round of the Iowa High School State Wrestling Championships at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

There isn't a doubt in Cullan Schriever's mind.

"I will (be back)," Schriever said. "No matter what."

The two-time state champion broke his right ankle during his first match of the Cheesehead Invitational in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, on Jan. 4 and didn't return. Despite the adverse conditions, Schriever, a junior, is confident in his ability to return for districts, which begin Feb. 9.

"Training is a little different, but a lot of the same still, just not being able to wrestle," Schriever said. "More biking, doing other things, more lifting. But I’ll be back."

Schriever said when he initially felt the 'pop' he thought to himself, "I'm done." But after getting a diagnosis, his mindset shifted.

"Just gotta get myself feeling as good as I can," Schriever said. "I’m still confident that I’ll do just fine at state."
