Clear Lake-Mikayla Vanderploeg batting

Clear Lake's Mikayla Vanderploeg looks at a pitch against Mason City during the Mohawk softball tournament played Saturday in Mason city.

Iowa Falls- Alden 10, Clear Lake 6

The Clear Lake girls softball team was one out away from victory on Tuesday, with two out for Iowa Falls-Alden in the top of the seventh, and the Lions leading by one. But the Comets scored five two-out runs, and wound up with a 10-6 victory.

Clear Lake looked like it was in the drivers seat for most of the game. Junior Julia Merfeld scored the Lions first two runs, and after Layne Lester and Sara Faber scored in the fifth, Clear Lake had a 5-0 lead.

In the sixth, Hailey Bridgewater led off the inning for the Comets, and reached base on an error. Lorren Steinfeldt then hit a single, driving in the run. Later in the inning, the Comets tied the game on a bases-loaded triple from Elise Osman, tying the game at 5-5.

In the bottom of the sixth, Clear Lake sophomore Mikayla Vanderploeg scored, as the Lions took a one-run lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Lions got the first two outs, but fell victim to the five-run Comets rally.

"We've just got to learn to put people away," coach Austin Peterson said. "That's part of our issue now. We're up, and I don't know if we coast, or what it is. Our pitchers threw well at the end of the game. We had two outs, nobody on, and a chance to put the game away. We just got lackadaisical."

It was the second straight loss for the Lions, who are now 5-8. The win for Iowa Falls-Alden snapped a three-game losing streak. Clear Lake will play on Wednesday, at Humboldt.
