MASON CITY — While Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR claimed the top two spots, St. Ansgar junior Addy Carlson wasn’t far behind in third.

Carlson crossed the line in a strong sprint at 20:57.6, her knees gently catching her slowed steps as she walked off to grab a red popsicle.

“I was not expecting to get that time at all,” Carlson said. “Nothing under 21 at all. It’s one of my fastest races.”

Carlson is breathless, her medal dangles low around her neck. She hopes it’s the first of many.

“My goal is to break 20 this year and hopefully that happens and I make it to state again,” Carlson said.

Rockford senior Sheridan LaCoste followed in fourth place with a time of 21:03.0. Despite a top-four finish, LaCoste was hesitant to get too excited.

“I feel like I started out really good,” LaCoste said. “At the end, I got a really bad side cramp and I tried to push through that and did the best I could. For a first race, I feel alright.”

She couldn’t remember her time, but for right now, she’s focused on being in the meet atmosphere again.

“I feel like I do better if I don’t expect anything of myself,” LaCoste said. “I knew I wanted to do top 10, top 5 so I feel like that was accomplished.”

Newman Catholic highlighted the team standings, taking second overall to Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR.

Junior Grace Henrich claimed a top-10 spot at No. 9 with a time of 22.15.0, sophomore Chloe Nelson followed at No. 11 with a time of 22:44.3. Anchoring the team were freshmen Lilly Stockberger, Josie Fritz and Zoey Thompson. All placed within the top 30.

“Chloe was our No. 1 runner last year,” head coach Mike Schutt said. “She was struggling a little early to get going, so she ran about what she’s run so far this fall, which is good to see because we want her to be running her best in October and not August.

"Grace, she ran like she always runs, which is good. I was really happy with our three freshmen, they’re our next three.”
