The Clear Lake Lions are headed to the state tournament for the third year in a row.
Clear Lake defeated Algona 54-51 on Saturday, Feb. 17. in the Class 3A Region II final.
The teams were tied 25-25 at half and stayed within close contention until the very end.
Clear Lake led 49-47 with 1:51 left and pulled ahead on a pair of free throws by sophomore Lexi Fasbender, 51-47. Algona scored with 59 seconds left, then added a pair of free throws for a 51-51 tie with 48 seconds left.
Sophomore Sara Faber drove in for a layup to make it 53-51 and senior Chloe Mueller would add a shot from the line to seal the deal with just over six seconds left 54-51.
Algona had one last chance to drive down court, but the Lions would steal the ball on defense to punch the ticket to state.
Faber led the team with 17 points and senior Jordyn Barragy added 14. Fasbender finished the night with 12 points.
Clear Lake (22-2) faces Monticello (19-5) on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 3:15 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena.
