As the Senate continues to advance a tax bill including devastating changes to the current health care system, I want to remind (and thank) Sens. Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst about their support of the Alexander-Murray bill, a nonpartisan plan to stabilize the Affordable Care Act. From across the aisle, senators came to an agreement to fund Obamacare’s cost-sharing program, recently removed by President Trump. This agreement will benefit millions of Americans that are currently worried and uncertain about their health care coverage.

Our senators should also know that a more timely issue than tax reform is the reauthorization of the Children's Health Insurance Program, known as hawk-i here in Iowa. Congress missed the deadline for renewal on Sept. 30, and has yet to bring it to a vote. Iowa currently has funds to serve the 60,000 children on CHIP and hawk-i through March 2018. With our budget crisis at the state level, the future of Iowa's program is uncertain without federal reauthorization.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, when parents are covered, kids are more likely to get the care they need. Support the Alexander-Murray bill and the reauthorization of CHIP, so Iowa’s parents and children get the care they need. Children are the future of our country. They need our support now.
