Our family received an unexpected gift this Christmas from the U.S. Postal Service.

At 8:15 a.m. on Christmas Day we received a call from what the caller ID reported as “US government.” The friendly voice at the end of the line said she had just sorted a small package from Zach Becker in Florida and that he probably wanted it to arrive by Christmas. She invited me to come to the post office to pick it up. She was leaving in about 20 minutes, but even offered to return later if we could not make it in time.

The package was filled with special messages for every person in our family from Zach. His words went a long way in helping to fill his absence.

Without the extra effort of this conscientious public employee, we would not have received these meaningful gifts. Her actions captured the true meaning of Christmas.

At a time when there is so much criticism of public employees, our family wanted to share this example of service above and beyond.

- Sherry O. Becker is from Mason City.
