Sir, I read in your paper of today, the 31st instant, a letter from Ms. Linda Born of Clear Lake, who would have the City improve the band festival parade by the more prominent recognition of military veterans. I am grateful for her letter, as it affords me the opportunity to dissent.
Surely the best possible improvement to the parade is the addition of more bands, not the particular placement of veterans. As Ms. Born admits, it is a “band” festival, after all. If the many area high school bands which no longer attend could be persuaded to return, the parade would be improved by their renewed participation. And if the City could attract bands and musical acts of other kinds and calibers, their inclusion would be a welcome enhancement of the festivities as well.
Band Fest is a happy tradition for Mason City. But it must continue to improve. Tradition alone is not enough to maintain the parade, and neither is any number of patriotic gestures. I trust citizens will not insist on transforming every municipal activity into a military affair.
