Pedestrians walking through downtown Mason City will notice a colorful addition to the sidewalks after Saturday.

Thanks to the work of students in Youth Investing Energy in Leadership Development, Mason City will have a total of six new interactive art projects adorning the sidewalks.

Each year, the YIELD group, comprised of students from Mason City High School, Mason City Alternative School and Newman Catholic High School, completes a project for community betterment.

After consulting city officials and local businesses, the students gathered ideas to create the interactive street art in six locations to give passersby a sense of play when exploring downtown.

The projects, including hopscotch, dance steps and an obstacle course, will be located by Moorman Clothier, Brick Furniture, the Mason City Public Library, The Music Man Square, East Park and MacNider Museum.

Students will be working on the project throughout the spring.
