FOREST CITY | Winnebago County Attorney Adam Sauer has been appointed as associate district judge for District 2A, which covers North Iowa.

He succeeds Judge Annette Boehlje, who died last year.

Sauer was among three finalists for the position. The others were Clear Lake attorney Mike Moeller and Boone County Magistrate Dan Gonnerman.

After Boehlje's death, a magistrate appointing commission met and nominated the three finalists from among applications they received. The final decision was made by sitting judges in District 2A.

Sauer practiced law with the Daron Fritz law firm in Lake Mills for two years before becoming an assistant Winnebago County attorney in 2009.

In 2010, the county attorney position was changed from part-time to full-time.

Sauer, a Republican, ran and won, defeating independent Paul Walter and has remained as county attorney, winning re-election in 2014.

The Winnebago County Board of Supervisors will meet in special session at 11 a.m. Thursday to discuss how to fill the vacancy.

They have the option of appointing Sauer's replacement or calling for a special election. If they choose to appoint someone, citizens can petition to hold an election.
