MASON CITY | Twin brothers Logan and Houston Conway hit an unusual fishing double Sunday in East Park.

They both landed large muskies.

"(Houston) ended up catching a muskie in the morning, so I got up, took a shower and went out," said Logan Conway, a senior at Newman Catholic School.

Logan landed a 15-pound, approximately 45-incher around 7 p.m.

Houston's was about 14 pounds. He wasn't able to measure it, because he didn't have a tape measure, Logan said.

The fish were released back into the river.

Although not unheard of, anglers don't normally catch muskies that big in East Park.

“Getting one that size out of the river is a pretty big deal,” said Alex Templeton, a North Iowa fishing guide and vice president of the Clear Lake Fishing Club. “That’s a cool deal.”

Muskies, which are stocked in Clear Lake, are occasionally caught on the Winnebago River.

“I’ve heard of it happening,” Templeton said. “I’ve heard of it happening as far up as Fertile, the Fertile dam.”

Logan Conway was using a white twister tail, hoping for walleye, when the muskie hit Sunday afternoon.

It struck the lure right next to shore.

"I saw it," Logan said. "It came right up, snatched my lure and took off."

The fight lasted about 10 minutes.

Houston jumped into the water and grabbed it, making sure it got to shore.

It was a lot bigger than the lone muskie Logan caught last year in East Park.

Like the fish he caught Sunday, his 2016 muskie was caught at the beginning of the fishing season.

It was the only one he caught there all year.

Logan hopes Sunday's muskie isn't the only one he catches in East Park. But, even if it is, the 19-year-old knows how lucky he was to get it.

"Catching muskie, in the river, at least, is every old man's dream," he said. "They go out there all day, every day, just hoping to get one.

"I've been lucky to get two of them."
