Recovery fundraiser for Floyd County Fairgrounds underway

Charles City tornado

The Floyd County Fairgrounds in Charles City sustained severe damage during a tornado that touched down at 12:31 p.m. May 27.

Just two days after a tornado severely damaged the Floyd County Fairgrounds, a recovery fundraising effort by an Iowa enterprise is underway.

Iowa love, a newly founded social enterprise with a mission of “uniting the millions of folks who have an affinity for Iowa while supporting Iowa businesses, craftspeople, and nonprofits” is teaming up with Downtown Charles City-based business The Rustic Corner to raise funds for Floyd County Fairgrounds clean up and recovery efforts.

“Coincidentally, I was driving north on 218 up to Minneapolis through heavy rain outside of Charles City Monday afternoon and I was bewildered when I then turned on Iowa Public Radio to hear that the nearby Fairgrounds were destroyed," said Waterloo-native William Heathershaw of Iowa love. "I knew that this destruction would run deeper than the physical damage as thousands of folks across the county – and the state – have an emotional connection to the fairgrounds."

On Tuesday, Heathershaw approached their Charles City retail partner, where dozens of “Iowa love” shirts have been adopted by the community since the beginning of May.

Within minutes of receiving a text to see if there was something the two entities could do together to support recovery efforts, Heathershaw was determined that she wanted to donate a big chunk of the Iowa love T-shirt sales – $10 of each one sold – for the next 10 days.

Amy Staudt, Floyd County Fair Board president, who was on the fairgrounds during Monday’s tornado, was pleased to hear of the fundraising effort, Heathersaw said.

“Iowa love” is a community of folks across Iowa and the country who have an affinity for the state. Its symbol – a unique script simultaneously displaying both the words “Iowa” and “love” – is featured on apparel and gift items to support Iowa businesses, craftspeople, and nonprofits.

“Iowa love” Tees are available through local retailers in Cedar Falls, Charles City, Clear Lake, Decorah, Dubuque, Grinnell, Independence, Montezuma, Northwood, Waterloo, Waverly and through its website ( with screen printing in Cedar Falls and fulfillment operations in Waterloo.
