February 1, 1950 - December 27, 2017
SHEFFIELD | Ronald Dick Siems, 67, known as ‘Hort' by most, died Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at home. A visitation of family and friends will be held at Zion St. John Lutheran Church, Sheffield, Saturday, January 13, 2018, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:30 a.m. led by Rev. G Kim Wills. Immediately upon conclusion of the service, everyone is invited to share more memories during a lunch provided in the church fellowship hall. The gathering to celebrate Hort's life will be informal.
Ron was born February 1, 1950 to Dick and Goldie (Rieman) Siems, and was a lifelong resident of Sheffield. He was baptized as an infant in the former EUB (Evangelical United Brethren) Church, attended Sheffield-Chapin Schools and graduated in 1968.
In 1970 Ron married the love of his life, Judy A. Loken. Together they had a daughter — Rebecca Anne, and a son — Joseph John.
Ron was employed at the Sheffield Brick and Tile for many years until it closed down completely. Then he began his career as a semi-truck driver. He drove for Doug's Transfer until the business was discontinued, then shortly thereafter, drove many years for Con-Way Freight, (now known as XPO Logistics), til he retired in 2016.
Ron spent his childhood as a very quiet and shy person and no one really knows how that changed, but when he started talking, he kept on talking, and talking, and talking!
Ron was a champion pool player and would take on any opponent that challenged him.
Ron was a ball player! He began with Little League Baseball and ended with Slow-Pitch Softball into his 50s. There was even a time that he played for 3 different teams. He coached Little League as well as a couple of women's softball teams. He also did more than his fair share of umpiring.
Ron went right from ballplayer to golfer. It didn't take long for him to love the game, even though his club would sometimes fly farther than his ball in the beginning.
Ron was a hunter. For many years he hunted with his “Buckshot Buddies” over by Greene. He loved pheasant season and it was his favorite time of year, as they were some of his favorite people.
Ron was a dad. He thoroughly enjoyed children…especially his own. They were his pride and joy and a great source of happiness.
Ron was a grampa with them his pride, joy and happiness became greater!
Left with many memories to share with each other are his wife of 47 years: Judy Loken Siems; daughter: Rebecca Siems Anderson (Jerry) of Des Moines; son: Joseph Siems (Melanie) of Nora Springs; granddaughter: Emily N.
