Richard Dale Mason was born October 20, 1935, the son of Joseph and Helen (Bents) Mason in Dumont, Iowa. He grew up in Dougherty and graduated from Sheffield High School in 1954. His plans to attend college were altered when he received a request from his country to serve in the Army.

Richard was united in marriage with Darlene Ubben at the E.U.B. Church in Sheffield on December 29, 1957 and just celebrated their 60th anniversary.

Rich began working at the Chapin School as Janitor and continued in Sheffield as they closed the Chapin building. After nearly 30 years he left the school in 1988 and became the Dock Manager at Younkers in Mason City and held that position for 17 years.

A family oriented man, Richard enjoyed attending all his grandchildren's activities and sports. He instilled the lessons in his family to always help those who are in need. He was definitely a ‘Mr. Fix-it' rarely discarding things because, ‘they just might be useful to fix something else.' He was active in his church, as an usher and greeter, served on the designing and building committee and assisting with the building of the current building. In the summer Richard frequently rode his bicycle to Sheffield each day to visit his friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years: Darlene; children: Brenda (Carl) Anderson, Shawnee Mission, KS; Brian (Kim) Mason, Belmond; Rhonda (Amado) Guerrero, Sheffield; 8 grandchildren: Bridget (Mark) Ortiz; Danielle (Josh) Arnold; Jenna Anderson; Rachel (C.J.) Reeves; Lindsey Mason; Madelyne Mason; Jacy Guerrero; Ylani Guerrero; great-grandchildren: Isabella; Camden, Sophia, Sebastian, Elijah & Oliver.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Helen Mason and mother and father-in-law: Emil and Dorothy Ubben.
