Livestock killed in rural Joice barn fire

JOICE | Ducks, geese and goats were killed in a barn fire in rural Joice around 11 a.m. Thursday.

The barn, located at 24151 405th St., was fully engulfed in flames when fire departments from Lake Mills, Forest City and Joice arrived on the scene, according to Kirby Holtan, Lake Mills fire chief.

Holtan said firefighters initially thought all of the livestock escaped safely; however, after talking to owner Larry Berg, it was discovered some animals died in the fire.

No humans were injured.

Holtan said a cause has not be determined yet and might be hard to determine due to the extensive damage.

Lake Mills Ambulance provided assistance.
