Hild remembered for enthusiasm, kindness

MASON CITY | Amy Hild was remembered by friends Thursday as a creative, engaging person who always had a big smile.

Hild, 27, of Rockford was killed Wednesday in a traffic accident on the Avenue of the Saints. Her funeral is Monday in Clear Lake.

“When you met her she had that big beautiful smile,” said family friend Scott Bell of Mason City. “The thing was about that smile, it was really, really a perfect reflection of the type of person she was.”

Hild, a graphic designer, had a positive outlook that could turn anyone's day around, said friend and co-worker Laura Cunningham.

“She just really had a zest for life and she was very curious in nature and doing new things and always learning something new,” said Cunningham, who worked with Hild at Latham Hi-Tech Seeds. “And on the flip side she was always willing to help other people learn.”

Hild was actively involved in a group of area writers known as the North Iowa Bloggers. Group members met regularly for outings and formed a close bond.

“Even though she was only 27 she lived life more than some 80-year-olds,” said friend and fellow blogger Donna Hup of Northwood. “It’s a really good example to be the best you can be (and) to help others. That was her legacy.”

On her blog, "Modern Rural Living," Hild reviewed products and restaurants, shared recipes and chronicled her adventures living in rural Iowa. She was a source of encouragement to other local bloggers. Several gathered Thursday to grieve and share memories of Hild.

“The way Amy treated people always reminded me to be kind,” fellow North Iowa blogger Jeni Flaa wrote in an email. “Amy was always kind to others and went out of her way to help them, no matter how close friends they were or how well she knew them.”

Hild died in a chain-reaction crash in a snowstorm about 11:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the Avenue. The crash happened when vehicles slowed to merge from the outside lane, which state troopers had blocked because of debris from an earlier crash.

Two other drivers, Keith Hillis, 80, of Charles City and Austin Lesher, 48, remained hospitalized in fair condition on Thursday. A passenger in another vehicle, Bedrije Ademi, 47, was treated and released.

The crash remains under investigation.

A 2005 graduate of Clear Lake High School, Hild was the daughter of Steve and Deb Hild of Clear Lake. She was engaged to Spenser Gruis of Rockford.
