DES MOINES (AP) — A former Mason City woman has pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a student.

Erin (Patrick) Rohwer, 27, who taught at Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, admitted in Polk County District Court on Wednesday she had sex more than once with the male student, who was 18 at the time.

A sexual relationship between a teacher and student is illegal under Iowa law.

Rohwer, who was head of the school's English department, was arrested in January. She was later placed on leave by school officials. She has been employed at the school since 2003.

Rohwer is a 1998 graduate of Newman High School.

She faces up to five years in prison when she is sentenced. She will also have to register on the state's Sex Offender Register.

Sentencing is scheduled for May 6.
