THOMPSON | Former State Rep. Clifford Branstad, 90, of Thompson died Monday at the Lake Mills Care Center.
Branstad served in the Iowa House from 1978 to 1996 during the time when his second cousin, Terry Branstad, was lieutenant governor and then governor of Iowa.
Cliff Branstad had a reputation of being a man of few words, working with members of both parties to get legislation passed and shunning the limelight whenever he could.
"I've probably talked less than anyone here," he said in a 1996 interview with the Globe Gazette. "I'm not a debater. I work behind the scenes to build consensus. That's my role."
He often worked on bills with the late Sen. Berl Priebe, an Algona Democrat. Upon Branstad's retirement, Priebe said, "I think Cliff and I delivered a lot for the district."
Services for Branstad will be Thursday.
