Double Homicide 2

Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation agents and local police investigate the scene where two bodies were found in a home on the 300 block of 27th Street Southwest in November.

MASON CITY | A trial has been scheduled for a Mason City man accused in the stabbing death of his grandparents.

Codie Matz, 25, entered a plea of not guilty Tuesday in Cerro Gordo County District Court to two counts of felony first-degree murder.

He has demanded a speedy trial, which has been scheduled for Jan. 23, 2018, at the Cerro Gordo County Courthouse, according to court documents.

Matz was charged after police said they found his grandparents, Kenneth Hackbart, 61, and Kathleen Hackbart, 64, dead in their southwestern Mason City home during a welfare check Nov. 7. Matz was arrested in the Des Moines suburb of Bondurant later that day.

Court documents say Matz lived with the Hackbarts.

Matz continues to be held in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on a $1 million bond.
