CLEAR LAKE | A man accused of stealing from a Mason City smoke shop and a Clear Lake gas station was caught with meth and fake money, according to police.

Dustin Lloyd James Schmeda, 20, of Spring Lake Park, Minnesota, has been charged with felony possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, felony forgery and two counts of misdemeanor fifth-degree theft following two incidents Aug. 16.

Police say Schmeda stole $54 in property from Mason City Smoke Shop, 497 Indianhead Drive, and candy, Tums and beef jerky valued under $100 from Casey’s, 6 Plaza Drive, Clear Lake, according to court documents.

He was located and searched near the Pilot Truck Stop. Clear Lake police said the search yielded two baggies containing less than a gram each of meth and seven fake $20 bills, according to criminal complaints.

Zalatia Natalie Swanson, 20, Fridley, Minnesota, was also charged with misdemeanor fifth-degree theft in connection with the theft from Casey's. She has pleaded guilty to the charge. 

Schmeda is being held in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on a $5,600 bond.

A non-jury trial for the theft charges is scheduled for Sept. 13. A court date hasn’t been set for the felony charges.
