Police identify man struck by vehicle Wednesday night in Mason City

MASON CITY | Police have released the name of a man who was seriously injured Wednesday night after a vehicle struck him in Mason City.

Police say Jason Garcia, 43, of Mason City, was walking with another person northbound on South Eisenhower Avenue when a pickup struck him from behind about 10:47 p.m. Wednesday, near the intersection of 19th Street Southwest.

The driver of the pickup, Jay Paulsen, 45, of Mason City, was cited for driving under suspension. He is scheduled to appear in Cerro Gordo County District Court Nov. 28 on that citation. 

Garcia, who was walking in the roadway, was transported to Mercy Hospital for "extensive injuries," Mason City Police Capt. Mike McKelvey said in a news release. Garcia was later transferred to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. 

He was listed as being in critical condition Friday afternoon, according to a Mayo Clinic hospital spokeswoman.

Paulsen and the other individual, who police say was walking on the shoulder of the road, were not hurt. 

The incident remains under investigation. No additional charges had been filed in connection with the crash as of Friday afternoon. 

The Cerro Gordo Sheriff’s Office and the Mason City Fire Department assisted at the scene.
