MASON CITY | A Mason City man arrested for selling marijuana faces additional charges for bringing cocaine into the Cerro Gordo County Jail.

Tirrell Harlan Hopkins, 18, has been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to delivery and possession of contraband in a correctional institution.

At about 12:51 a.m. July 3, Mason City police stopped Hopkins under suspicion of driving while intoxicated and leaving a park after hours near 15th Street Southeast and South Massachusetts Avenue.

Police said Hopkins’ vehicle “smelled heavily of marijuana” and contained an alcoholic beverage and a case of beer in the back seat. A search yielded baggies of marijuana, suspected marijuana wax and several boxes of plastic baggies, police wrote in charging documents.

When Hopkins was searched at the jail, court documents say police also found a small scale, more marijuana and $270 cash in separate bundles.

He also pulled out a small, plastic baggie from his underwear containing suspected cocaine after police repeatedly told him to turn over illegal items before being taken into the jail, according to court documents.

Hopkins was also cited for possessing or purchasing alcohol as a minor.

He is being held in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on a $5,000 bond. A court date hasn’t been set.
