MASON CITY | A Mason City man accused of first-degree murder in the deaths of his grandparents will be arraigned in court this month.

Codie Matz, 25, was charged after police said they found Kenneth Hackbart, 61, and Kathleen Hackbart, 64, dead in their southwestern Mason City home during a welfare check Nov. 7.

Matz lived with his grandparents, court documents indicate.

Court documents list the time of the incident as 7:23 a.m. Police said in the criminal complaint that the two were stabbed.

Matz’s arraignment is Nov. 28 at the Cerro Gordo County Law Enforcement Center.

He is required to appear for the arraignment unless a written arraignment is filed prior to the hearing.

Matz is being held on a $1 million bond in the Cerro Gordo County Jail.
