A Mason City man already in prison for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl now faces additional charges for allegedly abusing another child from the time she was 6.

Brent James Champney, 34, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony second-degree sexual abuse, third-degree sexual abuse and lascivious acts with a child.

A jury trial is scheduled for Aug. 27 in Cerro Gordo County District Court.

The girl told law enforcement that Champney began sexually abusing her in 2007, according to court documents.

She said the abuse continued until a few months before Champney was sent to the Newton Correctional Facility in 2016 for a conviction of third-degree sexual abuse.

Champney was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison in that case, in which he admitted to having sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl in October 2015.

If he is convicted as charged in the new sexual abuse case, he could be spending an additional 45 years in prison.

Champney was transported from prison to the Cerro Gordo County Jail for his arraignment.
