MASON CITY | A Mason City man accused of assaulting a person on hospital property said he would not appear for further hearings, according to court documents.
Nicolas Lee Duarte, 19, was charged with misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury or mental illness stemming from an incident about 8:55 a.m. Friday in the 1000 block of Fourth Street Southwest or the Mercy Medical Center–North Iowa property.
According to charging documents, Duarte punched a person's shoulder and arm, causing redness and pain.
At his initial appearance, Duarte told the magistrate he did not want counsel and would not appear for further hearings if released on his own recognizance, court documents said.
He is being held in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Feb. 13 in Cerro Gordo County District Court.
