CERRO GORDO COUNTY | The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a possible assault on I-35 early Tuesday morning.
The sheriff's office said in a news release deputies were dispatched to a medical call about 1:20 a.m. near the 180 mile marker on I-35 southbound.
“Dispatch advised deputies while en route that the semi truck driver, Steven R. Butts, 51, of Utah had been assaulted by two unknown males,” the news release said.
Butts told deputies two men in their 20s were driving an older model -- possibly 1987 -- white Chevrolet Suburban with no license plates when they flashed their lights at Butts and motioned for him to pull over.
When Butts pulled over, the two men told him to check the back of his semi.
When he walked to the back of the semi and checked, he was approached by one of the men, who had a knife, and told him they were going to take his truck, law enforcement said.

“Butts defended himself before the second subject then approached Butts and hit him in the abdomen,” the news release said.
Both men then returned to their vehicle and left the scene. Butts was evaluated by Mason City Fire medics. It is unclear if he was hurt.
Deputies were unable to locate the vehicle.
The Iowa State Patrol, Meservey EMTs and Thornton EMTs also assisted at the scene.
