MASON CITY | Cerro Gordo County supervisors approved the purchase of four new motor graders for the county at its weekly meeting Tuesday morning.
County Engineer Mary Kelly recommended the supervisors buy new motor graders earlier this year, noting the age of the current equipment.
Board Chairman Casey Callanan asked whether the motor graders had lasted long enough for the county. Kelly said they had, noting the equipment had been purchased in the early 2000s.
She added at around the 12-year mark, there is typically "catastrophic" engine and transmission failure in motor graders.
The county recieved a bid of $978,000 from Murphy Tractor and Equipment Co., but accepted the lower bid of $928,600 from Ziegler CAT.
Murphy Tractor supplies John Deere equipment and has locations in Fort Dodge and Waterloo, and Ziegler CAT supplies CAT equipment out of Mason City.
