MASON CITY | A celebrity bartender contest raised $5,500 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation on May 16 in the Historic Park Inn.

Led by Scott Shipman of North Iowa Community Credit Union, a team of bartenders consisting of Bob Klocke of First Citizens Bank, Brad Walters of Hy-Vee East and Mike Winblade of Hy-Vee West won the contest.

The second-place team included Fouad Daoud of WHKS, Jerry Stambaugh of the Heiny law firm, Sybil Soukup of Human Society of North Iowa and Jodee O’Brien of Main Street Mason City.

The evening also included the introduction of Shelby Effle Field, 8, Charles City, who is the 2014 Youth Ambassador for the North Iowa chapter of JDRF. She is the daughter of Jay and Laurie Field of Charles City.

Shelby was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in November 2012. She and her family have faced the challenge head-on, helping to raise more than $3,500 with a milk and cookie sale at school.

Including sponsorships, the North Iowa chapter of JDRF has raised about $7,000 this year.

Those who would like to make a tax-deductible contribution may do so at any time by mailing a check to JDRF in care of Iowa Heartland Credit Union, 1602 S. Monroe Ave., Mason City, IA 50401.
