NALC steward and food drive coordinator Tom Teeter unloads a truck load of food at the Post Office on Saturday.
MASON CITY | The National Association of Letter Carriers in Mason City and Clear Lake and Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank volunteers participated in the Stamp Out Hunger food drive on Saturday.
They collected food donations left at mailboxes to provide assistance to the thousands of North Iowans who are struggling with hunger.
Celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year, the Stamp Out Hunger food drive is the nation's largest single-day food drive, having collected more than one billion pounds of food since its inception as a national food drive in 1993.
Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank volunteers drove two of their commercial vans to pick up food donations during the day to assist local letter carriers.
Last year, letter carriers in Mason City and Clear Lake collected 16,227 pounds of food.Â
This year the group hoped to reach 20,000 pounds.
"Last year was a little on the lower side," said NALC steward and food drive coordinator Tom Teeter as he unloaded a truck load of food at the Post Office on Saturday.
"Because of the perfect weather this year we think we'll do more," added Teeter.
