DAMIANSVILLE, Illinois | A Ventura man has died after falling while painting a water tower with a work crew in southern Illinois east of St. Louis.

The Clinton County coroner's office identified the victim of the Monday afternoon accident as 31-year-old Dustin L. Spilman of Ventura. He was part of a crew from Elgin hired to paint the Damiansville water tower.

The coroner says workers notified sheriff's deputies of the accident just before 2 p.m. Monday. Spilman was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese, Illinois.

Coroner Phillip Moss said Spilman was apparently working his way to the top of the 100-foot-tall water tower when he fell.

An autopsy was planned , and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident.
