Marshalltown murder unsolved after 10 years

MARSHALLTOWN (AP) - The beating death of an elderly woman in her Marshalltown home remains unsolved a decade later.

Assistant police chief Brian Batterson was a detective when he investigated the August 2001 death of 73-year-old Ila Mae Clark. He said that someone knows something about the crime and he holds out hope for justice.

Clark was found beaten to death in her home and about $500 was missing. An autopsy showed she died of multiple head injuries.

Police never found a murder weapon and never named a suspect in the case.

Batterson says there was some suspicion of a couple staying at a hotel in the area at the time but police couldn't find evidence connecting them to the killing.
