MASON CITY — Officials with the Wright on the Park organization today completed purchase of the former City National Bank building next door to the former Park Inn, a hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright which opened in 1910.
The building at 2 S. Federal Ave. is occupied by Moorman Clothiers. Owner Scott Moorman plans to move his business to property across the plaza from his current location.
Wright on the Park received a short-term loan of $550,000 from Community National Bank to purchase the bank building from Sara Building Partnership.
The price includes the building and some art glass windows used in the original building project.
It’s hoped restoration on the entire complex can be completed by Sept. 10, 2010 — the 100th anniversary of its opening.
The Park Inn is the last remaining hotel designed by Wright, the famed architect who died in 1959 at age 91.
“Wright’s design for this bank and hotel complex is known throughout the world, and has influenced other architects and other buildings over the years,” said Ann McGregor, executive director of Wright on the Park Inc.
“The value of the restoration and rehabilitation we have started will be greatly enhanced with this purchase.”
