Who knew sitting next to each other in high school math class, would lead to, not only a relationship, but marriage.
For Caylin Ahlf and Bret Williams, that is exactly what happened.
The two met during Caylin’s sophomore year and Bret’s junior year at St. Ansgar High School.
“We immediately felt a connection after sitting next to each other in Mrs. Schweisow’s Algebra II class,” said Caylin. “As of this year, Bret and I have been together five years and will forever be high school sweethearts."
Fast forward to this past summer, following Caylin’s trip to Germany.
“I traveled to Germany for three months to help out at an Army base," she said. “Upon my returning home, I walked through the airport doors to pick up my luggage. Bret was waiting for me, down on one knee.”
The couple was surrounded by both of their parents.
“The moment was so magical and it was so loud, from all the clapping and cheering, we could hardly hear each other,” Caylin said. “He put the most beautiful ring on my finger and I said ‘Yes.’”
Caylin is the daughter of Robert and Theresa Ahlf. She is a 2015 graduate of St. Ansgar High School. In 2016, Caylin graduated from North Iowa Area Community College, with an associates degree in social work. She then transferred to the University of Northern Iowa, where she received a bachelor’s degree in social work as well as a certificate in child welfare. In May, she plans to move back to her hometown of St. Ansgar, where she plans to work as a social worker in the child welfare setting.
Bret is the son of Glen and Pam Williams. He is a 2014 graduate of St. Ansgar High School. In 2016, Glen graduated from North Iowa Area Community College, with an associates degree in elementary education. He then transferred to the University of Northern Iowa. In May, he will receive a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. After graduation, he plans to move back to St. Ansgar, complete his student teaching. He would then like to a third-grade teacher.
The couple plans to be married on June 2 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. Their future plans include moving back to St. Ansgar in May. Following the wedding, the couple will honeymoon in Blue Ridge, Georgia.
When they return, Caylin and Bret said they look forward to enjoying married life and settling down with their new full-time jobs.
“We are both very family oriented,” said Caylin, “so having a big family is a must for us.”
