CLEAR LAKE — The annual Winter Dance Party is ready to rock with some new faces and returning favorites at the Surf Ballroom, Feb. 1-4.
The event celebrates the music of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J. P. “Big Bopper” Richardson, who died in a plane crash following a Winter Dance Party appearance at the Surf Ballrooom on Feb. 3, 1959.
Headlining this year’s event is Pat Boone, who first made his mark in the 1950s with such hits as “Love Letters in the Sand,” “Moody River,” and “April Love.”
Other new faces include the Bobbettes, whose most famous hit was “Mr. Lee,” Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys and Sid King and the Five Strings.
Danny and the Juniors, Flamingos starring Terry Johnson, Josh Holmes Trio, Tommy Allsup, Marshall Lytle and Jason D. Williams all return to the Surf, as well as John Mueller’s Winter Dance Party, featuring J. P. Richardson, Jr., son of The Big Bopper, and Ray Anthony as Ritchie Valens. The Valens family will also be on hand.
Wednesday, Feb. 1 —
1 p.m. Press conference and unveiling of the plaque designating the Surf Ballroom’s placement on the National Register of Historic Places.
7 p.m. “Warm-up” concert featuring the Whitesidewalls, Surf Ballroom. This is a separate ticket from the Thursday-Saturday main event concerts, which are sold out. Tickets are $7 in advance; $10 at the door.
Thursday, Feb. 2 —
7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Rockin’ & Boppin’ Record show, Best Western Holiday Lodge, Clear Lake. Free and open to the public.
10 a.m.-noon. Dance lessons, Surf Ballroom, free to Dance Party ticket holders $5 to general public.

1:30-3:30 p.m. Winter School Dance Party, featuring “Buddy’s Buddies” presented by Winter Dance Party Scholarships and Awards Program, E. B. Stillman Auditorium, Clear Lake Middle School, $5 at the door.
7 p.m. Evening concert featuring Denny & The DC Drifters, The Flamingos starring Terry Johnson, Danny and the Juniors and Jason D. Williams. Sold out.

9-11 a.m. Surf Ballroom Rockin’ Kids Show, providing rock and roll history, music and dancing for K-6 students. Music by John Mueller’s Winter Dance Party, free to students and Dance Party ticket holders; $5 to general public.

Variety show Feb. 4 in Clear Lake
CLEAR LAKE — The Clear Lake Arts Center and the Clear Lake Chamber have teamed up to present a 1950s Variety Show at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, in the the Diamond Ballroom at the Best Western Holiday Lodge.
The show will feature local musicians and actors in musical vignettes, comical skits and more.
Doors open at 11 a.m., with lunch served at 11:30. The show begins at 12:15 p.m.
