DUNCAN — Visitors are welcome to the small Czech village of Duncan for its 14th annual Duncanfest, Sept. 17-18.
The festivities are held in the Duncan Community Ballroom, where old-time dance music is the priority.
Four well-known bands, all of which have been featured on “Mollie B’s Polka Party” on RFD-TV, will take the stage this year.
Dancing starts at noon Saturday with Duncan’s own Malek’s Fishermen Band kicking things off. Three generations of Maleks have kept this band going for more than 80 years. The band, which continues a busy touring schedule, features many Czech and German favorites.
Alternating with Malek’s will be Harvey Becker’s Riverside Dutchmen, from Hutchinson, Minnesota. This band travels the Midwest playing the music of many old-time greats, including Elmer Scheid’s Hoolerie Band and The Babe Wagner Orchestra.
Wrapping up the evening, from 7 to 10 p.m., will be The Sugarbush Boys from Sugar Bush, Wisconsin. This seven-piece band, making its first appearance in Iowa, enjoys playing the eastern Wisconsin Bohemian sound.
On Sunday morning, Malek’s Fishermen Band will play for the polka Mass at 8 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, across the street from the ballroom.
A breakfast buffet at the ballroom will follow the Mass.
The dancing resumes at noon with the featured band The Sugarbush Boys.
Alternating with The Sugarbush Boys will be Barefoot Becky’s Ivanhoe Dutchmen from Cedar Rapids, playing until 6 p.m. Becky’s band travels the world playing old-time dance music.
The annual queen contest will also be Sunday with reigning queen Jeanette Raichle from Owatonna, Minnesota, and Miss Congeniality, Beverly Durst, from Primghar, passing on their crowns.
The Duncan Ballroom is air-conditioned with a 50-by-75-foot hardwood dance floor, and continual renovations keep the hall updated. Czech meals will be served daily and there will be a full bar.
The Duncan Campground is next to the ballroom.
Duncan is located on U.S. Highway 18, between Britt and Garner. For more information, call or email Eric, 641-923-9903, or email@example.com; call Bob at 641-923-3316; or visit www.duncanballroom.com.
