On May 7, Jean A. Perkins of the Britt Dean Welsh VFW Post 4370 attended and provided flag key rings to all the Veterans who attended the 14th Annual Iowa Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day Ceremony in Des Moines.
Other members of the Britt Post also attended the ceremony that was held south of the Iowa State Capitol building, at the Vietnam Memorial. The Disabled American Veterans, Des Moines Chapter 20, and Central Iowa VA Health Care System hosted the event.
The honored keynote speaker, was Col. Gerald "Gerry" Berry, USMC (Ret.). Col. Berry is a highly decorated, two-tour, helicopter pilot who "ended the war in Vietnam" Perkins said she was grateful to spend time visiting with Col. Berry, who was pleased to receive one of the flag key rings. Key rings were given to all of the Young Patriotic Club singers, who sang patriotic songs and provided the lyrics in sign language.
Dignitaries given flag key rings included MacKenzie Highlanders Pipes and Drum, North High Marine Corps Junior ROTC, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 790, Local 5 ABC-TV anchor Jackie Schmillen, Chaplain (Colonel) Dean Baer, USA Ret., Captain Dan Gannon, USMC Vietnam Veteran, Jasper County Veterans Alliance Chair Doug Bishop, Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg, Spec. 5 Dave Grant, USA, 3/5 Armored Cav. 9 Infantry Division, Petty Officer 2nd Class Jim Fisher, USN, USS HANCOCK (CV 19), Marine Corps League Det. 103, and bugler Gloria Eason.
