The Riceville baseball team lost by three runs to Janesville on Thursday, May 23, as its offense had a big performance, but the pitching struggled.

Riceville's offense finished the day with eight hits. On the mound, Ryan Larsen pitched 4 2/3 innings, and allowed seven runs, and seven walks, on 105 pitches. The defense also contributed to his struggles, as only four of his seven runs were earned. Sophomore Isaiah Hill came on in relief, and threw 2 1/3 innings, allowing two hits, five runs, with only two earned. 

Riceville held an 8-5 lead going into the sixth, but Janesville scored two runs in the top of the inning, and pushed across five more in the top of the seventh.

With the loss, Riceville is now 1-1 on the season.

The Riceville baseball team scored a season-opening win over Clarksville on Monday, May 20, collecting seven runs on five hits and four walks in a 7-3 win. Starting pitcher Ryan Larsen pitched two innings, and allowed only one hit, but was pulled after giving up two runs on five walks. 

Junior Sully Fair came on in relief and pitched five innings, and allowed six hits and one run on 91 pitches. Fair struck out nine batters. 

The Wildcats face Dunkerton, on the road, on Tuesday, May 28 as well Colo-Nesco on Wednesday, May 29; and Tripoli, at home, on Friday, May 30.
