As you know, Iowa weather can be unpredictable and this winter has been exceptional with regard to inclement weather days.
To date, we have experienced 8 school closures for weather and 2 for state events.
This includes canceling school on Wednesday, Feb. 13 so students and staff could attend the State Dual Wrestling Meet, in support of our wrestlers, as they have qualified as a team for the first time since 2007.
Each closure/late start/early out means lost instructional hours for our students.
The Iowa Department of Education requires a minimum of 1,080 instructional hours for students. We built in 64 extra hours in this year’s calendar but are almost out of any extra hours.
We must also hold staff to their contracted work days which are figured in days.
District administrators, with input from staff, have come up with a plan on what we need to do in order to make up hours and days missed so far.
The school board took recently took action ont he matter.
They approved the following:
•Parent Teacher Conferences were on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 11 and 12

* No School February 13 (State Dual Wrestling) and No School Feb 15 PT Comp Day
•Monday, Feb. 18 was a full day of school with students
•Monday, March 11 students will attend school until 12 p.m., afternoon - staff - Mitchell County PD
•Friday, March 15 will be a full day of school with students
•Thursday, April 18 will be a full day of school with students
•Monday, April 22 will be a full day of school with students
If we miss no more school days and no more hours we are confident students can still be done by May 24.
If more days are missed, then students would be attending the last week of May. Staff will make up other missed work days in a combination of classes, conferences, and curriculum work days.
We hope you understand we do the best to ensure the safety of students and staff while providing the best educational opportunities possible.
We are all ready for spring and hope we can get back into a routine.
