OSAGE | The last day for students in the Osage School District will be Friday, May 31, if no additional hours are missed due to inclement weather.
Students will now attend a full-day of school on March 15; April 18 and 22; May 28-31.
As of Thursday, Feb. 28, the district had experienced 11 school closures for weather and two for state events.
The Iowa Department of Education requires a minimum of 1,080 instructional hours for students.
The district had built in 64 extra hours in this year’s school calendar but are out of any extra hours. In addition, the district must hold staff to their contracted work days which are figured in days.
If the district misses no more school days/hours, Osage Superintendent Barb Schwamman is confident students can still be done by May 31.
She added if more days are missed, then students would be attending in June. Staff will make up other missed work days in a combination of classes, conferences and curriculum work days.
“We hope parents understand we do the best to ensure the safety of students and staff while providing the best educational opportunities possible,” Schwamann said. “We are all ready for spring and hope we can get back into a routine.”
