OSAGE | Mitchell County and other North Iowa counties are being asked to contribute funds to a Clear Lake-based human resources company to help area businesses attract employees from Puerto Rico.

Jennifer Andrade, founder and CEO of The Avance Alliance, spoke to the Mitchell County Board of Supervisors on April 9 about the proposal.

Andrade, the former director of the Mitchell County Economic Development Commission, left that position last year to start Avance.

Several Mitchell County employers, including Grain Millers and L.R. Falk in St. Ansgar, are already working with Avance to recruit employees from Puerto Rico.

Tony Stonecypher, who succeeded Andrade as director of the MCEDC, said economic development groups from throughout North Iowa met last week to discuss her proposal.

He said the idea is to ask North Iowa counties to contribute to a stipend that would allow area businesses to receive services from Avance at a reduced rate.

The complete story will be available April 16 in the print version of the Mitchell County Press-News and online.
