WEST DES MOINES | Over 370 food insecure students in Mitchell County have received Power Snack coupon booklets for deli ham and whole wheat bread.
A program of Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation, Power Snack kits, which contain a $5 coupon for deli ham and a $3 coupon for a loaf of whole wheat bread, aims to reduce childhood hunger by providing access to nutritious foods at home. Deliveries were recently made to Riceville, St. Ansgar and Osage Community School Districts.
“More times than we know, the only meals students are eating are those they receive at school,” said Lynn Baldus, principal at St. Ansgar Middle School and High School. “Weekends and breaks are tough on these kids. It’s is very hard for kids to learn when they are hungry.”
