OSAGE | On Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2:00 the annual meeting of the Mitchell County Historical Society (MCHS) was held at the Milt R. Owen Nature.
This year’s annual meeting had guest speaker, Denis Boerjan of Saint Ansgar. Boerjan, MCHS board member, is in charge of the log house and schoolhouse located at the Mitchell County Fairgrounds in Osage.
Boerjan spoke on the history of the log house as well as gave an update on the progress on the Log House Restoration Project, which was started this year.
The program included an auction of 11 pieces of “art” created by Boerjan using discarded materials from the Log House Project. Each of these pieces included a unique artifact with creative and appropriate framing, a Certificate of Authenticity, and a description of the object. This auction was a fundraiser with proceeds being used for the ongoing Log House Project. Funds are still needed to cover the cost of a new roof, new windows, chinking (the mortar between the logs), and other building supplies and expenses. All labor has been volunteer to date.
Special guest for the program was Nels Golberg of Saint Ansgar who has offered to help with this project. Nels’s years of experience in construction as well as his knowledge of history have played a large part in helping with this project. Another major volunteer has been Jim Krebsbach of Stacyville. Krebsbach also has knowledge of Iowa history and has been willing to do many of the jobs requiring climbing and crawling into smaller spaces.
