OSAGE | Osage High School senior, Gracie Halbach, doesn’t have a lot of time to do free things. She balances her time between going to school and working. She currently works two jobs, at the nursing home in St. Ansgar and at Teluwut in Osage.
Each week Gracie works at both jobs along with attending school each day and working on homework.
When asked which job she liked more, Halbach said, “I enjoy both jobs, but I like working at the nursing home better because I would like to go into nursing after high school.”
While working at the nursing home, Halbach works many different shifts. She works in the morning, evening and even does some overnight shifts. Her favorite is working the overnight shift. An overnight shift for Halbach starts at 10 p.m. and ends at 6 a.m. “An overnight shift consists of doing laundry, answering call lights and doing rounds at 12:30 a.m., 3 a.m. and 5 a.m,” Halbach said.
After high school, Halbach plans to attend North Iowa Area Community College to earn her RN degree. After graduation, Halbach is hoping to take online college classes through Buena Vista University to get her BSN. “After I get my BSN, I am hoping to move to Boston, Massachusetts and get my MSN and then continue nursing or maybe become a midwife,” Halbach said.
Halbach is able to keep her grades up and do well in school while working two jobs. Working two jobs can be stressful for an adult, let alone a high school student. Halbach has learned multiple things from working two jobs. She said, “While working two jobs and still going to school every day, I have learned how to manage my time and get everything done that needs to get done, and it has also taught me how to be more responsible.”
