Earl A. Kilen

August 3, 1937 - June 7, 2019

Earl A. Kilen, 81, of Fertile, passed away Friday, June 7, 2019 at his home surrounded by loved ones.

A Celebration of his life will be held Saturday June 29, 2019 from 4pm to 7pm at the Fertile Community Center in Fertile, Iowa. Please come for a “happy hour” celebration in Earl's honor.

Earl was born August 3, 1937 on the family farm outside of Fertile, the son of Nels and Hilda (Suby) Kilen. An only child, Earl grew up in the Fertile area attending Fertile High School. In 1967 Earl married Elizabeth “Liz”, who passed away in 1970. In 1976 Earl married Lana K. Hanson and helped raise her four children: Jerry, Ken, Stephenie, and Tim. Throughout his life Earl had many jobs, but spent the most time working as a heavy machine operator. For many years he worked at Tuttle Asphalt and then at North Iowa Sand and Gravel where he retired from in 2018.

As much as Earl loved driving the loaders at the quarry, he also had a passion for rocks. He found great joy in rock and fossil hunting, and gathered quite the collection over his lifetime. He was a generous man who didn't know a stranger- those who walked through his door were considered friends and promptly offered a beer. Earl loved fishing. He enjoyed going on the boat with Tim and his family when they visited. Earl stated his only regret in life was not spending more time fishing. Earl cherished the time he spent with his granddaughters, Sheyanne, whom he raised as his own, and Holly along with their families. Earl was very thankful of those close to him, friends, family and neighbors.
