Sponheims

Dean and Josh Sponheim examine a cover crop at their farm.

THOMPSON | Winnebago County Farm Bureau is partnering with the NRCS to host Nora Springs farmer, Dean Sponheim, who calls himself the “accidental conservationist” at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19 in the Round-Up room of the Branding Iron, Thompson. A free meal will be served at 6 p.m.

After Sponheim speaks there will be a question and answer session with NRCS and local farmers who have been using these conservation practices.

Sponheim and his son, Josh, are always looking for ways to improve their fields. They use strip tillage and cover crops such as annual rye grass, crimson clover and tillage radishes. They have also been experimenting with strip cropping, the practice of alternating rows of corn and beans in the same field.

Reservations can be made by calling Mary at Winnebago County Farm Bureau, 641-584-2265, by Friday, March 15.
