Forest City High School Homecoming photos (photos)
FOREST CITY | Forest City High School celebrated homecoming last week.
Among the highlights were Friday's pep rally -- which included the coronation of the homecoming king and queen -- and a parade.
Here are some photos from those events.
Puckerbrush Days a big hit in Forest City
Puckerbrush Days in Forest City began Thursday, July 19, and ran through Sunday, July 22. The event had both entertainment and lots of fun.
Headlining the weekend of entertainment was Pianopalooza, a Des Moines-based piano cover group with a full band, covering music from the 1950s to current hits. Also Friday, the Forest City Municipal Band played in the Gazebo.
Puckerbrush Days included a beer garden, food court, parade, waterball competition, bounce house, fireworks, mud volleyball tournament, kid power pedal pull and the Bill Riley Talent Show.
Vintage Forester camper owners hold rally in Crystal Lake
CRYSTAL LAKE | Forest City Industries, maker of the Forester travel trailer and 30-year competitor of Winnebago Industries, is seeing a resurgence of its trailers in campsites across the nation.
People eager to learn more about the vintage camper and where it was built attended the second annual Vintage Forester Trailer Rally at Crystal Lake Park Sept. 13–16.
In attendance was Marlen Hanson, Forest City, one of Forester's first employees.
Forester campers, or travel trailers, were manufactured in Forest City from 1959 to 1980. The compact units with a silver shell and birch interior were 14 feet to 30 feet long.
Clarence Riekena, of Mankato, Minnesota, a 25-year employee of the company, said, “I was fortunate to watch the RV industry grow in front of my eyes as Forest City, Iowa, became the RV capital of the world.”
Most of the campers at the Vintage Forester Rally claim to have purchased their trailer from a grandparent, a friend-of-a-friend or they found it abandoned in a weed-covered grove.
Kerby Hanson, son of Marlen Hanson, bought his 1968 21-foot Forester camper in 2011 in Windom, Minnesota. He said some of his fondest memories were of camping with his family in their old Forester.
“I was determined. I looked all over,” he said. “I wanted to take the kids camping like I did."
For Marlene Wilder, of Rollingston, Minnesota, it was the look of her 1963 14-foot Cub that she fell in love with – “A canned ham with birch interior,” she said, as she smiled.
After Wilder purchased her trailer in March 2016, she immediately began looking for any information on the Forester and finally ran across the Vintage Forester Travel Trailer group on Facebook, started by Julie Schneblin of California in 2009.
“I took it camping for the first time in May 2017,” Wilder said. “Then I posted I wanted to see where my camper was born and a few people said they would join me.”
Sonja Backer, a 1973 18-foot Forester owner from Clear Lake, joined her.
In all, 28 campers wanted to join them and the first Vintage Forester Rally was held in Pilot Knob State Park in 2017.
As soon as Kerby Hanson heard about the Facebook group and the planned get-together at Pilot Knob, he got his father on board. His dad still had their original family camper, a 16-foot 1970 Forester, which he pulled out of storage.
“When you see the pride they, Marlen Hanson and Clarence Riekena have in these and they're still seeing their product on the road being used the way it is supposed to is priceless,” Backer said. “Them saying, 'I did the ceiling or I did the walls.' They love telling their story.”
Riekena summed up the event best when he wrote, “The interest your group has taken in vintage Foresters means a lot to those of us who spent our lives building Foresters. It is comforting to know the work product of men and women from a small town in Iowa still survives and is being nurtured back to life.”
