FOREST CITY | At the end of the Y Arts class for January, Aviana Holkesvik twirled and ran with her newly-made tied fleece blanket draped over her shoulders like a cape.

The 10-year-old said she enjoys going to the classes at the Forest City YMCA because you can "make cool stuff to put in your bedroom or your home somewhere."

She also said the completed projects also can be given to others as birthday or Christmas presents.

Y Arts is offered one Wednesday afternoon a month during the school year. Classes start at 2:30 p.m. because Wednesdays are early-out days in the Forest City school district and end at 4 p.m.

Youth in grades 4-7 are eligible to participate.

The cost is $10 per class, which includes the cost of materials.

Kids can take just one class if that particular art project interests them, but most of them sign up for an entire semester and beyond, according to Jody Swanson, assistant program director at the YMCA.

"We just try to keep it interesting," she said, noting the projects are things the kids will want to keep.

"I want them to get their money's worth," Swanson said.

Projects the Y Arts participants will be working on this semester include night lights on Feb. 21, decorative bread bowls on March 21, wall art on April 18 and pop can flower holders on May 16.

The January project involved taking two pieces of fleece, placing them on top of each other, cutting strips into the edges and tying the strips together to make a blanket.

Hayden Johnson, 10, chose a fleece with a zebra pattern for the outer layer of her blanket. She plans to make a matching scarf out of the leftover material.

"I've been to all of them (the classes)," she said. "We've done a lot of creative stuff."
